The Quiet Damage of Moisture in Bathroom and Kitchen Cabinets
In a newly handed-over apartment everything looks perfect. The real test comes at the end of the first winter: the base of the sink cabinet has swollen slightly, and the door next to the dishwasher no longer closes properly. Most of these problems can be prevented by small decisions made on the day of production.
Where does the moisture get in?
The boards used for cabinet carcasses resist moisture well as long as their surfaces are covered. Trouble starts where the covering ends: cut edges, screw holes, openings for plumbing. Water gets in there and the board slowly swells.
Edge banding: the first line of defence
Edge banding should be applied not only to visible faces but especially to bottom edges and every cut section under the sink. How tightly the banding adheres, and whether it stays closed at the corners, directly determines the life of the cabinet.
Plumbing openings
Holes for the trap and pipes under the sink are often cut on site and left raw. Sealing these edges with silicone or a suitable cover is a small job that adds years. Where possible, share the plumbing positions before production so the holes can be cut at the factory.
Hinges and hardware
Wet areas call for hinges and fittings that resist corrosion. Soft-close hinges stop doors from slamming and also reduce the loosening of fixing points over time.
Ventilation and daily use
The steam released when a dishwasher is opened hits the worktop and side panels directly. A steam-protection strip on the panels next to the machine, and not opening it right after the programme ends, are simple but effective measures.
A short list for project teams
- Edge banding on every cut section of wet-area cabinets
- Plumbing holes cut in production, or sealed if cut on site
- Stainless or moisture-resistant hardware
- Steam protection next to the dishwasher
- Legs or a plinth to keep panels off the floor
