Is Sound Escaping Through the Door? Acoustic Insulation in Interior Doors

Corridor noise is one of the most common complaints in hotel reviews. At home, it’s the meeting coming through the study door or the baby’s room at night. The wall usually gets the blame, but sound takes the easiest route, and that route is usually the door.

Where does the sound get through?

Sound passes a door in three places: through the leaf itself, through the gap between leaf and frame, and under the door. A good core makes the leaf heavier, but if there is a finger-wide gap underneath, sound will pass straight through it. Insulation is only as good as its weakest point.

The leaf: weight and core

Hollow or lightly filled leaves transmit sound more easily. Leaves with a dense core are heavier, close more firmly and noticeably reduce speech noise. For bedrooms, studies, meeting rooms and hotel rooms, always ask about the core.

Seals: a small part that makes a big difference

The seal on the frame lets the door close softly and closes the gap around the edge. It matters that the seal sits evenly in the frame, has no breaks at the corners and can be replaced over time.

Under the door: the most neglected spot

A gap under the door is needed for ventilation and floor differences, but when it is larger than necessary, most of the insulation is wasted. In rooms where quiet matters, an automatic drop seal that lowers when the door closes is a good solution.

Installation: it can ruin or save everything

Even the best door will leak sound if the gap between frame and wall is not properly filled. The foam and filling behind the frame must be complete, the frame must sit level and the leaf must press evenly against the frame at every point.

Checklist for a quiet room

  • A leaf with a dense core
  • A continuous, evenly fitted seal in the frame
  • An automatic drop seal where needed
  • Installation that leaves no gaps behind the frame
  • A wall that matches the door: however good the door, a thin partition will carry sound

Acoustic insulation is not a single product feature but the result of well-chosen parts working together. Tell us which rooms are the priority in your hotel, hospital or residential project, and we can look at suitable leaf and hardware options with you.
